The best scenes in the film are those that move outside its range of cultural thinking - the ones in which Dennis Hopper lives. Why then, at the end of "River's Edge," does something of the movie stay with you? Partly because, however ineptly, it manages to touch on something - on a sort of deadening of the soul - that's threateningly real and that these teens symbolize. What the filmmakers don't seem to realize is that a numbed response to anything as monumental as death is a natural one. The film raises questions - about our reactions to death, about the ramifications of change in the culture - and then makes a muddle of them. Matt's answer is always the same: "I don't know." And the filmmakers want us to hear the rumbling of the apocalypse in his words. In one scene, a cop bears down on the Matt (Keanu Reeves), the boy who "narcs" on John, screaming, "What did you feel when you saw her? Were you shocked? Angered? Excited? Or didn't you feel anything?" The movie's point of view is essentially that of alarmed parents. It's like "Rebel Without a Cause," but only the bad parts - the scenes between James Dean and Jim Backus. "River's Edge" looks at its troubled teen-agers in the same way that the youth movies of the '50s and '60s did. They want to blame somebody.īut the movie's thinking is hackneyed and sloppy. It wants to find out why these kids, who have grown up in splintered, lower-middle-class homes, are like they are. The film has a hectoring, hysterical tone. Jimenez and Hunter use the characters' lack of affect as an indictment. When Layne asks him to help bury the body, he answers over his shoulder, "She's heavy."Īt its worst, "River's Edge" is crackpot sociology. From his point of view - which, though it makes sense, is hard to embrace, simply because Glover is so bad - John's act is a test of their loyalty and friendship, and he tries to encourage his mates to come to his aid. Layne, a rag-mop speed freak, is not only the gang chief, he's their moral center. And, in practical terms, it's the wrong one. Only Layne, the group's de facto leader, seems to have an emotional response. They're blanked out, voidoids, and their emotions have been so worn away that they can't even react to the loss of their friend. They are completely unsophisticated and, in the area of sex, not very advanced. They smoke and drink beer and hang out at the arcades. The movie, which is Hunter's second feature - his first was "Tex" - focuses on a group of dopers and heavy-metal freaks who have known each other since kindergarten. One member of the gang, Layne (Crispin Glover), pokes her with a stick to see if she's real. Looking at her stone-dead corpse, they still can't believe it. He's panicked, and when they don't believe him, he takes them in small groups down to the river bank. After grabbing a couple of brews, John (Daniel Roebuck) goes to school and tells his friends, not so much indulging in locker room braggadocio as looking for help. Neil Jimenez, who wrote the screenplay, and Hunter have loosely based their story on a similar 1981 case in Milpitas, Calif., in which a heavy-metal teen throttled his girlfriend, raped her and then walked away, leaving her nude body behind. The image of that dead girl's body at the begining of Tim Hunter's new film, "River's Edge," is a potent one, and it's at the mixed-up heart of this movie. Death, he thinks to himself, changes everything. Sitting at her feet, the boy stares into space, rocking gently back and forth, clutching the girl's clothes. Only a short time has passed, but already her lips have turned a grape-juicy purple, and, lying against the bright green of the grass, her skin has an unearthly alabaster hue. Beside him lies the nude body of his girlfriend, whom he's just strangled to death. It's a gray northern California morning, and by the edge of the muddy waters of a river at flood-tide, a big, lumpish teen-age boy lets out a couple of loud, spirited whoops.

The Marvel of it All: WandaVision, for the most part, has done a good job of staying focused on its story and not teasing future MCU movies and TV shows. From there, Vision and what remains of the Hex disintegrates, and Wanda heads off to not only master her newfound Scarlet Witch powers, but also hopefully deal with her grief. I know the internet had a field day with Vision's grief line last week, but this line hit me just as hard because I thought it was such a beautiful encapsulation of Vision's journey so far, existential and optimistic in equal measure. Who knows what I might be next?" says Vision before they depart. But then, Schaeffer tops herself with Wanda and Vision's tender and intimate farewell. "Boys, thank you for choosing me to be your mom." We know this isn't the first time she's had to say goodbye to her family, so that exchange is truly heart-wrenching. We could never truly leave each other if we tried," she tells Billy and Tommy, both of whom are tucked into their beds. Thankfully, Olsen fully commits and makes you feel how much Wanda is straining.)Īs the walls of her beautiful dark twisted television fantasy dissipates, Wanda, Vision, and the twins retire to their home for their goodbyes. I don't know about you, but I would've felt silly doing that. Obviously, the red energy field that surrounds Wanda was added in post, which means Elizabeth Olsen had to stand there and cry and grunt with nothing happening around her while shooting. (ASIDE: Honestly, MCU actors don't earn enough credit for scenes like this one. Eventually, Sharon asks Wanda to just let them die, but instead, Wanda opens the Hex long enough to hopefully let them escape. Wanda insists that she's been keeping the people of Westview safe, but it's clear that's not completely the case. A lot of the time, those who are grieving sort of get lost in their pain - because grief is a powerful force - and don't realize how it negatively alters their everyday demeanor and affects those closest to them. That moment really resonated with me because it's true, at least from my experience. "Your grief is poisoning us!" Debra Jo Rupp's Sharon says. As that happens, they begin to converge and overwhelm Wanda, forcing her to confront the ways in which her actions have hurt them all. Once the battle reaches the town square, Agatha, who wants Wanda's powers, distracts the nascent Scarlet Witch by waking the townspeople up. For all the many colorful balls of powers whizzing through the sky, the action still felt relatively grounded and proportionate for what the show has been up to this point. The thing I did enjoy about the action sequences, though, is how they struck a nice balance between Marvel Cinematic Universe-level quality but still feeling like a TV show, if that makes sense. It's a lot, and it looks like Disney+ didn't skimp on the special effects. reanimated, and Vision is the version of the character Wanda created in the Hex and we've spent time with this season.) From there, the four characters start flying around Westview as more balls of energy and head-blasts fly across the screen. (Note: In this recap, White Vision is the version of Vision S.W.O.R.D. Eventually, the two witches start exchanging magical energy balls, and the White Vision we saw at the end of "Previously On" joins the fray intent on killing both Wanda and Vision. "The Series Finale" picks up where we left off last week with a stand-off between Wanda and Agatha, who is still holding the twins by magical leash. In addition, you can also do a reverse layout. You can also look at the dataset by clicking on the blue arrow to the left of the dataset in the Global Environment window. The output of this line of code is simply the first six lines of the gapminder dataset. There’s nuance here, and the war, which claimed tens of millions of lives, is handled with respect. The tone is fairly light, tales of derring-do and survival at all costs that feels a million miles from the heavy sentiment seen in Battlefield 1. The single-player section of the game, the returning War Stories, brings some interesting ideas to the game in a campaign that feels all too brief, and a little overly concerned with stealth at the expense of getting to rock ‘n roll with some of the game’s meatier weapons.Įach campaign tells a vignette from a side of the war that hasn’t often been covered before, putting you in the shoes of soldiers on the African front or a young member of the Norwegian resistance. Vehicles are plentiful in the online arena of Battlefield 5 But tab away from the game for a second, and you’re reminded of the numerous small irritations, problems that have stalked the Battlefield games ever since it first set foot in World War 2 with Battlefield 1942. I’m enjoying it, and writing this review has been punctuated by long breaks as I dip into the multiplayer to check something and then get dragged into a pitched battle, reviving my fellow teammates as we push towards an objective. There are few changes, but this is understandable when you consider that the series’ first real attempt at a complete reinvention - the much maligned Battlefield Hardline - was a disaster for the company, and since then Battlefield has played it safe.īattlefield 5, for all of its bluster, is unfortunately, no exception. While each release in the series might feature EA jumping up onto a stage to talk about how the game will be changed forever, it’s often the same game with minor tweaks to the gadgets and weaponry to fit the setting. The Battlefield series has always exemplified this to a degree, with the addition of one caveat: in each Battlefield game, War slightly changes. War, if numerous Fallout trailers have taught me correctly, never changes. |
